Good news, it looks like TPCast’s wireless upgrade kit for the HTC Vive won’t kill you. Or at least parts of it won’t.
The PC transmitter for the device has been given FCC approval as of last week. The transmitter (pictured above) is the piece of technology that you place somewhere in your play space, ideally high up, similar to how you would place a Vive base station. When we first tried TPCast, this transmitter had a 160 degree field of view. It communicates with a router attached to your PC.
On top of that, it looks like the kit’s battery has also been approved. The battery plugs into the wiring on your Vive itself to give you a few hours of wireless playtime.
With the FCC’s approval the transmitter and battery are both safe to be sold in the USA though they’ll come as a set with the rest of the kit that will include everything you need to use your Vive without being wired to your PC, a troublesome factor of the current VR experience that hurts immersion for many.
We still don’t know exactly when TPCast will be launching over in the west.
