U2 Jumps Into AR To Promote Latest Tour

Bono and co have already climbed into virtual reality headsets with a 360 degree video, and now U2 is experimenting with augmented reality, too.

The band just launched a brand new AR experience on iOS and Android via its U2 eXPERIENCE app. Once you’ve downloaded the app you’ll be able to point your smartphone at a copy of the band’s latest album, Songs of Experience (or just an online image if you haven’t got it to hand).

Doing so will summon a virtual image of Bono singing his heart out. Maybe not the most amazing use of AR, but a different way to experience the band’s music for sure.

But that’s not all. Just as with Eminem’s performances at Coachella over the past two weeks, the app will include AR experiences for those that are heading to one of the band’s shows over the next few months.

It looks like major bands are very interested in using AR as a way to enhance their concerts, then, but will fans take to the idea?
