The Unbreakable Gumball Is VR’s Latest Superhero Game

by David Jagneaux • March 2nd, 2018

We’ve seen a surprising number of superhero-focused VR games in the past couple of years. Megaton Rainfall was a quality adventure, PowersVR channeled some unique emotions, and the upcoming Marvel Powers United features many of the world’s most iconic heroes side-by-side. There is still a lot of opportunity for superhero VR games though and developer Maxalo has a few idea of his own.

His work-in-progress game, The Unbreakable Gumball, is full of bright, cel-shaded graphics, a unique concept, and plenty of style to fuel an entire game. You can see some of the gameplay in action down below:

The Unbreakable Gumball describes itself as an “open-world, sandbox superhero game” on the download page in its full description:

“The Unbreakable Gumball is an open-world, sandbox superhero game leveraging the power of virtual reality to make you really feel like a hero.  The game takes place in the 22nd century, in Elysia, a city-state suspended over the Atlantic ocean with buildings both above and below its surface.  Put an end to crime in the city, put villains behind bars, and save people in need as The Unbreakable Gumball!”

There are still aspects to the game that need some balancing work, such as the speed at which you swing around the world, but it’s already a feature-rich demo. The game’s titular hero gets her powers from bubblegum, so I can say with confidence I’ve never seen a character quite like this before.

If you want to try out The Unbreakable Gumball for yourself then you can download an alpha tech demo totally for free over on Maxaol’s page right here. It’s still very, very eaerly in development, but the art style and concepts at work do a great job of making you feel like you’re playing out a comic book superhero fantasy.
