Valve And Lionsgate Partner To Make Hundreds Of Films Available In VR

Valve and Lionsgate are announcing a significant new partnership that will make hundreds of films available on the former’s incredibly popular Steam digital distribution platform.

Steam is the largest online distributor of PC games in the world. It was reported last year that the service has over 125 million active accounts. The vast majority of this enormous base is made up of PC users looking to access PC games.

However, earlier this year Valve diversified its platform significantly by launching the HTC Vive – one of the world’s two most powerful consumer virtual reality headsets. With the release of the Vive, Steam is being inundated with a new armada of content hungry users eager to explore whatever new territories they can from inside the virtual world.

Steam currently offers a myriad of interesting VR titles for early adopters to test drive, but this deal with Lionsgate will open up an entirely new floodgate of content to satiate their ravenous appetites.

According to this morning’s joint announcement from the two companies, “The partnership will launch with over 100 Lionsgate feature films available to Steam customers, including movies from the Company’s blockbuster Hunger Games, Twilight, Saw and Divergent franchises. More titles will be added as the partnership continues to expand worldwide.”

The most important bit for VR fans comes at the very end of the release where it is revealed that, “Steam customers are able to view video on all Steam-supported platforms, including Windows, Mac, Linux, SteamOS, and in virtual reality via SteamVR.”

Lionsgate is the studio behind such blockbuster franchises as: Saw, The Hunger Games, Divergent, and Twilight – all of which will be made available on Steam as a part of this deal.

70  films are currently available to purchase on Steam immediately. They range in price from $3.99 at the lowest to $7.99 at the highest.
