Back in June 2016 we reported on the formation of a new VR studio by the name of Fast Travel Games. The team was formed of developers with experience in popular gaming series such as Mirror’s Edge and Angry Birds. A year on, at the team is announcing that it’s raised some $2.1 million in a Series A funding round.
The round was led by Nordic VC firm Industrifonden, with participation from Creades, Inbox Capital and Sunstone Capital, the latter of which was an existing investor. The studio itself is based in Stockholm, Sweden.
The addition of Series A funding brings the company’s total funding to $2.9 million, which it says will go towards development and release of its first game as well as expanding its staff. While the team isn’t ready to announce the project, the press release does describe it as an action-adventure game headed up by Erik Odeldahl, the design director on Mirror’s Edge Catalyst. It’s coming to all major VR headsets, so at a guess that’s Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, PlayStation VR, and the news Windows 10 VR devices, though that’s not confirmed.
The Mirror’s Edge series is known for its innovative locomotion system using parkour. We wonder if Fast Travel will be able to make its own unique contribution to VR locomotion, which has proven tricky to master.
With the expanded team, Fast Travel will also start work on its next game, with plans to double in size over the next year. Over the past year it’s brought on people from companies such as EA, DICE, Guerilla Games, Rovio and Avalanche Studios.
We’re eager to find out more about the team’s games, so hopefully more news will follow on shortly.
