A Munich-based company is preparing to release a new and innovative VR product that will make one of the industry’s biggest headaches a thing of the past.
The HTC Vive virtual reality headset is a marvel of modern engineering. The system has an incredibly advanced tracking system that uses two base stations — each containing a rapidly spinning laser. As the laser spins it is captured by diodes on the headset itself. The headset clocks what time each diode was struck by each laser and then an internal algorithm uses that information to determine where the headset currently is in 3D space.
So yes, the Vive is a marvel of modern engineering but it is also very component-complicated. It requires these elevated base stations — both of which must be mounted somewhere high and in opposing corners of a room — a powerful computer, the headset itself, and the controllers that come with it.
All of this adds up to a piece of consumer technology with a fairly steep learning curve and a decidedly time consuming setup process. This is particularly a problem for companies trying to travel with the system and set it up at multiple locations every day. Enter Innoactive — a German company that is introducing a new product known as the VR suitcase.
This suitcase contains everything one would need to run a Vive, including a powerful laptop and batteries, and the entire thing can be set up in under five minutes. Check out the video below if you don’t believe us.
The Innoactive VR suitcase contains: a VR ready notebook that contains a NVIDIA GTX 1060 included, carbon fiber docking station with integrated pre-wired Vive link box, rechargeable battery and power adaptors, the HTC Vive headset, controllers and carbon fiber monopods for base stations with integrated rechargeable battery packs for up to eight hours of wireless operation. All of this is packaged in a custom high-quality suitcase that is designed for maximum setup speed and to be air-travel friendly.
The full specs of the included laptop are as follows: MSI GT72VR with CORE I7, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, 1 TB HDD, NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1060.
Innoactive is currently accepting orders for its VR Suitcase. Each unit will cost €8,499 (around $9400 USD), plus a 15 percent German VAT, plus shipping.
