Stress Level Zero knows a thing or two about guns. If you haven’t already seen the studio’s multiple YouTube videos detailing weapon handling, then you’ve at least likely figured that out after playing its last two VR games, Duck Season and Hover Junkers. But the team’s latest VR tech demo looks like it takes accuracy with VR firearms to an entirely new level.
The team’s Alex Knoll put up the above video of the demo, called Boneworks, during GDC last week, and it’s quite amazing to watch. Yes, there are plenty of VR shooters out there that try to capture the feeling of power that comes with holding a gun, but Boneworks seems to make some important steps forward for authenticity. Weapon models, for example, are extremely accurate, and two-handed weapons actually need to be held with two hands in order to maintain accuracy.
Slow-mo gameplay shows bullet casings flying through the air too, though perhaps our favorite touch is the actual physical presence of the gun in the game world; the user is able to knock over boxes using the end of their rifle to create vantage points. Oh, and there’s also a cameo from Half-Life 2’s Gravity Gun.
According to Rock, Paper, Shotgun, it’s more of a testbed for features in Stress Level’s next game, Hall of the Machine King (which may have been teased in Duck Season). Here’s hoping we hear more about that soon.
