PSX 2017: What We Expect To See From Sony And PSVR

As the last major gaming event of the year, Sony’s annual PlayStation Experience is poised to kick off tomorrow down in Anaheim, CA. The opening PSX Conference starts tomorrow evening at 8PM PT and serves as a primer for things to come over the course of the weekend.

We’ll be there in person at PSX this weekend interviewing developers, playing demos of in-development PSVR titles, and getting a behind-the-scenes look at the future of Sony’s PSVR platform. Now, let’s dig into the details of what’s in store.

What We Already Know

We don’t know a whole lot about PSX at this point — it’s not as massive as a PAX, or E3, or GDC — so it’s most a waiting game to see what exactly will be playable at the show and what won’t be. However, we do have a few sure things that we can discuss.

First and foremost on Saturday morning there’s a mysterious panel that will include “a candid conversation between two legends as they discuss developing their new PS VR title and lessons from VR development.” During The Game Awards on Thursday it was revealed that this game is Accounting+, an expanded port of the HTC Vive title from Squanch Games and Crows Crows Crows.

Additionally, we know there will be a ton of demos for us to try out. A few that we’ve already got confirmed for hands-on time include Moss, Anamorphine, The Persistence, Gungrave, and several others, so stay tuned to UploadVR for lots of fresh hands-on previews over the next week.

One of the biggest games that we can hardly wait to learn more about though is Dreams, from Media Molecule. We’re not sure if the PSX demo this year is going to be playable, but it sounds like a VR version is still in the works, although it may not be ready at launch. Nevertheless, this is big news for the creative PSVR fans.

For the full list of PSVR games that should be playable at the show for the public, take a look:

  • Anamorphine
  • Bow to Blood
  • Bravo Team
  • Dark Eclipse
  • Farpoint
  • Golem
  • Gungrave
  • Knockout League
  • League of War: VR Arena
  • Medusa and Man
  • Moss
  • Resident Evil 7 biohazard
  • Shooty Fruity
  • Sprint Vector
  • The American Dream
  • The Inpatient
  • The Persistence
  • X Animal
  • Xing: The Land Beyond

In addition to these, we’re expecting some PSVR demos to only be available privately at the Media Arcade, which we’ll have full access to all weekend.

What We Expect

Now that we’ve got the sure things out of the way, we can start to speculate a little bit. Dreams will be at the show, but it probably won’t be showing off VR support this weekend. However, it’d be great to get a small tease again of what that might look like.

We’re also expecting at least one or two new game announcements, in addition to the big panel reveal on Saturday morning. Something from a major partner studio such as Insomniac (who are making Spider-Man for PS4 and just released three VR games for Rift in the past year) or even Naughty Dog (Uncharted, The Last of Us) would be huge.

Also, don’t be surprised if Sony touts the success and popularity of Skyrim VR, a game that seems to have really taken off in most VR gaming circles. I’d assume it’s doing much better than either Bethesda or Sony expected.

The Longshot Predictions

Now the real longshot prediction that has next to a zero percent chance of happening is that Sony and Bethesda would team up to announce an official PSVR version of Fallout 4 VR. They’ve done their fair share of hinting over the past year that they want to bring their games to “as many platforms as we can” so it’s only a matter of time before we finally get the chance to visit the Boston Wasteland.

Or, maybe we’ll get lucky and hear about plans for new and improved PS Move controllers with analog sticks built in, or a second PS Camera arrangement that would enable 360-degree tracking and roomscale interactions.

And if we’re really lucky maybe we’ll hear that Kojima is secretly working on a PSVR game that will be ready by the time the PSVR 2.0 is in the middle of its life cycle.
