After 8,000 Matches Logged, 'EVE: Valkyrie' is Getting Cross-Platform Multiplayer

EVE: Valkyrie is one of the biggest games available for the Oculus Rift and, very soon, the HTC Vive too. But developer CCP Games is far from finished, and it’s already keen to talk about the first major update.

The company offered more details about that update, likely to arrive this summer, at its EVE Fanfest event in Reykjavik, Iceland today. The highlight here is cross-platform multiplayer, allowing players to compete across the PC-based HMDs and presumably the PlayStation VR HMD when it releases in October 2016. Concrete details weren’t confirmed, though this is set to be the first VR game to enable multiplayer between HMDs and a major milestone for the industry.

But that’s far from all that’s planned for the update. As CCP Games has already teased, a new game mode named Carrier Assault will be arriving, and it had more to show today. It’s described as an extension of the Control mode already included in the title and sees players systematically take down the enemy carrier by capturing nodes to disable shields and more. Defensive turrets will spring up to swat you off, and victory will result in a fiery explosion, detonated from an attack on its core. A new trailer (above showcased the mode along with a brand new map named Crossroads, which is on display at the event with 5v5 matches.

Elsewhere, CCP Games confirmed that a joystick configuration will arrive for EVE: Valkyrie soon, possibly even before the main update. The developer was also keen to stress that it is paying attention to the community and is working on updates for areas like the progression system and squadding up.

Finally, some statistics. In the short time since EVE: Valkyrie has launched on the Oculus Rift there have been over 8,000 matches played with 200,000 ships destroyed. The top 3 players in the world have played around 1,000 of those matches between them. It’s a modest beginning, obviously held back somewhat by the delays to Oculus Rift shipping, but CCP Games is clearly committed to bringing vital new updates to the project over time.
