New Oculus Rift and Gear VR Releases For The Week Of 12/11/16

You’re probably not through the sheer swarm of Oculus Touch titles that landed last week yet, but there’s still a fresh round of Rift and Gear releases to get through this week. If nothing piques your interest then we recommend diving back into last week’s selection.

If you missed last week, you can see those new releases here. And don’t forget that UploadVR has a Steam community group complete with a curated list of recommendations so that you don’t have to waste any money finding out what’s good in the world of VR.

Plus — check out our list of the best Oculus Rift games and best Gear VR games for more suggestions!

Xbox One Streaming, from Microsoft
Price: Free (Rift)

Got a Rift? Got a Windows 10 PC? Got an Xbox One? Then why play real VR games when you can stream your console ones onto a virtual screen? Okay that’s a little harsh, I’m sure some people will find a lot of use for this long-awaited app, first promised in 2015. It’s as close as you’ll get to Halo in VR right now.

Recommendation: If you’ve got the kit, give it a try.

stajit-play

Stajit Play, from Winck Studios
Price: $14.99 (Rift)

Here’s another VR app that wants to revolutionize the way we make things. Stajit is a storyboarding app that looks a little like Quill or Tilt Brush, but is specifically tailored to help you stage and plan stories. This is an early release, with a Pro version of the app expected to arrive in the near future.

Recommendation: Obviously designed for a very specific audience.

Calcflow, from Nanome
Price: $9.99 (Rift)

This is a vector manipulation tool using Oculus Touch. It’s a little complex, so anyone looking for a simple game will want to look elsewhere, but it presents a much more intuitive way to interact with vectors and shape them.

Recommendation: Not for gamers, but math lovers should check this out.

deskverse

Deskverse, from ByteMosher Software
Price: $9.99 (Rift)

Deskverse comes at a kind of awkward time seeing as it’s (yet another) virtual desktop app, but lacks some of the bells and whistles you’d find in some other applications. It’s fun to have your screen enlarged in a virtual space, but other apps like Bigscreen are already well ahead in this field.

Recommendation: Seek out more feature-complete solutions for now.

Perfect, from nDreams
Price: $9.99 (Rift)

Sit back and relax in this picturesque follow up to nDreams’ Perfect Beach. Visit three different locations and take in their sights and sounds, throwing snow balls and uncovering easter eggs. Perfect is not really designed for anyone that’s reading this list, it’s meant to be a quick showcase of VR to show friends and family.

Recommendation: If you’re showing people VR this holiday season, Perfect is a good way to do it.

The Martian VR Experience, from The Third Floor and The Virtual Reality Company
Price: $9.99 (Rift)

A promotional tie-in to last year’s Ridley Scott sci-fi epic. The Martian casts you as Mark Watney, and takes you through several scenes of the movie. You hop from first-person experience to watching clips from the film, occasionally getting to interact with the environment by throwing potatoes into buckets or driving a rover. It lasts about 20 minutes all-in-all, and much of that is simply watching.

Recommendation: Avoid. This should be a free experience, not $9.99. Our review.

Konrad the Kitten, from IT Sonix custom development
Price: Free (Rift)

This is both one of the cutest and most terrifying things I’ve seen in a while. The premise here is that you’ll literally strap one of your Vive controllers onto a stuffed animal cat, preferably one similar to the in-game cat, and play with it in VR like it’s real. I mean, in a way, it’s kind of genius.

Recommendation: This is pretty adorable to be honest. If you’ve got kids or you love kids, this is worth trying out. Clever concept.

mahjong

Relaxing VR Games: Mahjong, from Daedalic Entertainment
Price: $2.99 (Rift)

First on Gear now on Rift. If you really wanted to play Mahjong in VR then chances are you’ve already done it, but if not then you may want to consider this chilled out take on the game. There are 162 boards to play on and simply relax to.

Recommendation: If you’re dying to play Mahjong in VR then this is for you.

Super Island God VR, from Empyrean Interactive
Price: $14.99 (Rift)

In this god simulator, use your divine presence to manage an island of people and creatures as they experience various seasons. Help them across six islands, each with their own challenges, and cast miracles as you go.

Recommendation: Definite purchase even in early access.

We Wait, from BBC
Price: Free (Rift)

A cinematic VR short that tries to capture the desperate situation that many Syrian refugees currently find themselves in as they make perilous journeys to safety. We Wait follows a family on a dangerous boat trip and is a great way to showcase VR raising awareness of current events.

Recommendation: Absolutely give this one a watch.

Disc League, from Virtually Invincible
Price: $4.99 (Gear VR)

Don’t worry Gear VR owners, you haven’t been completely forgotten this week. Disc League looks like a mobile take on disc-throwing game Ripcoil, just without position-tracked controls. Online multiplayer certainly makes this one an interesting thought.

Recommendation: If you have friends to play it with check this one out.

DUO, from NiVision
Price: $14.99 (Rift)

Bringing the brick breaking genre to VR is nothing new, but DUO stands out using tracked hand controllers as dual platforms to stop two balls from passing through, and it gets creative with the shapes the bricks form. From palm trees to dogs, there are 60 levels and designs to complete, and more levels are on the way. It’s bright and colorful and looks like a lot of fun.

Recommendation: This might be Touch’s best brick breaker. Give it a go.

Elven Assassin, from Wenkly Studio Sp. z o.o.
Price: $9.99 (Rift)

Ever wanted to be one of the badass elves from Lord of the Rings? This leaves you use bows and more to take down mythical beasts with an online co-op mode to boot.

Recommendation: Definitely one to check out if you’re looking for something new on Touch.

santa_art

Santa’s Christmas Chimney, from Field Of Vision
Price: $0.99 (Gear VR)

Gear VR gets festive with this game, in which you guide Santa as he falls down a chimney. Grab presents on your way down to make sure you’re not leaving anyone disappointed on Christmas morning, or play as the Grinch and avoid them (not a real feature).

Recommendation: If you need a little festive VR in your life, go for it.

Snow Fortress, from Mythical City Games

Price: $8.99 (Rift)

Snow Fortress adds new flavor to the frequent snowball fighting games that have been entering the VR ecosystem by adding some fort building into the equation and also letting you slingshot your snowballs.

Recommendation: If you haven’t already found a snowballer you enjoy, this could be the one for you.

Elena, from Catch A Cat

Price: $7.19 (Rift)

As Anna you must explore this atmospheric adventure game to discover the fate of her significant other. Seek out different items that begin to unfold the story and explain her husband’s disappearance.

Recommendation: This one has an intriguing premise, and a VR headset isn’t required so you can play it different ways.

We Are Stars, from NSC Creative

Price: $8.99 (Rift)

We Are Stars is an immersive science documentary narrated by the Time Master character, voiced by Andy Serkis. Learn of our cosmic history over billions of years.

Special Delivery, from Meerkat Gaming

Price: $8.99 (Rift)

Special Delivery, a game we covered in November, is a casual experience inspired by classic games like Paper Boy, Crazy Taxi, and Road Rash. Dodge cars, dogs, and tornadoes as you deliver your mail and grow your subscriber base.

Recommendation: The various neighborhoods and boss fights should keep you entertained, a great deal.

Unearthed Inc: The Lost Temple, from Glo Inc

This adventure has you team up with your sidekick Droid while solving puzzles and fighting enemies with your psychic powers and ingenuity.

Recommendation: One of the better and more exciting puzzle games available.

In Singing Stones explore the lush locale while gathering magic crystals or just view the beautiful scenery.

Recommendation: Another inexpensive escapist experience. Grab it if it tickles your fancy.

Alpine Ski VR

Price: $4.99 (Rift)

Hit the powder in three different event types: Slalom, Freestyle, and Heliski. Cut inside the splits, do tons of tricks, or fly around the site in a helicopter.

Recommendation: A fast action sport in VR. Grab if you think you can handle it.

inVR, from inVR, Inc.

Price: Free (Rift)

inVR is a platform where artists and designers put together 3D scenes that can be explored in VR.

Recommendation: Free way to experience some unique and fun creations.

DWVR, from Mad Triangles

Price: $8.49 (Rift)

Cycle quickly through different guns, swords, and spells for each hand and teleport around to destroy hordes of enemies.

Recommendation: Fun even in early access. Grab it and look out for new features and more optimization over time.

CoLab, from Pixel Federation

Price: $4.99 (Rift)

CoLab is a collection of 100 vastly different types of puzzles. In a reality show setting, endure humorous advice from the show’s host while taking on puzzles specifically designed with VR spaces in mind.

Recommendation: Inexpensive way to challenge yourself.

Last Mage Standing, from Immersion

Price: $3.59 (Rift)

This wave shooter casts you as the last young mage against a horde of skeletal assailants in armor. Use fireballs and a few weapons to defend as long as you can.

Recommendation: A cheap wave shooter if you absolutely want another, but not anything new to draw you in.

VR Invaders, from My.Com

Price: $14.39 (Rift)

As a freelance hacker, fight and defend against tons of drones in VR Invaders. Slow down time and transform your weapon as you shoot through the narrative.

Recommendation: Very lovely visuals and a lot of arcade shooter fun.

Caretaker Retribution, from Xiotek Studios Ltd

Price: $7.49 (Rift)

Move in any direction as you shoot down enemies inside a huge alien construct. Put your trigger finger to use as you seek out two pioneers that sought out to discover why the stars were being snuffed out.

Recommendation: You can find better shooters for the price. Pass.

Dimensional from Brett Jackson

Price: $4.99 (Rift)

Dimensional is a first-person physics puzzler that tasks you with getting through various chambers in order to save an alien race.

Recommendation: Solid and challenging grab for the price.

Heaven Forest – VR MMO, from Fabio Ferrara

Price: $0.59 (Rift)

MMOs are going to be quite intriguing experiences in virtual reality so many developers will try to tackle the experience in unique ways. Heaven Forest puts you in a peaceful area to reflect in with calm exploration.

Recommendation: Not much to this game even at the price.

Void Rangers, from Martin Senovsky

Price: $14.39 (Rift)

Void Rangers is an intense sci-fi defense shooter. Work for upgrades to your weaponry and shoot your way up the leaderboards.

Recommendation: Visually impressive and solid shooter only in early access. Keep an eye on it.

Balloon Chair Death Match, from Climax Studios Ltd
