Ubisoft only had one new VR game to showcase at its E3 conference this year, but it has another to talk about off-stage, and it comes with a new engine. That title is Space Junkies.
This new project is being developed by Ubisoft Montepellier. Set for release on Oculus Rift and HTC Vive in spring 2018, the game is an arcade shooter in which players use jet packs in 1-vs-1 and 2-vs-2 multiplayer battles. These fights take place inside arenas with micro-gravity, and will change based on the players’ actions inside them. It looks just a little like Oculus and Ready At Dawn’s Lone Echo, which is releasing next month. No sign of gameplay yet and no word on a PSVR version, sadly.
Interestingly, Ubisoft has built an entirely new VR engine to run the game, named Brigitte. It’s designed to help VR developers build worlds using VR interfaces. It sounds a little like Unity’s Editor VR, though without full details we can’t say that for certain.
