Weird 'Resident Evil' Music Videos, New JRPGs And More Confirmed For PS VR At TGS

It hasn’t even been a week since Sony revealed PlayStation 4 Pro but the company had even more news to share on the PlayStation VR front at Tokyo Game Show today.

In a press conference taking place ahead of the show’s opening Sony revealed several new PS VR titles along with other new experiences and release dates. First up was Summer Lesson, the somewhat controversial VR debut from Bandai Namco. In it, you build a relationship with a young student, helping her to study in her dorm. The game received a new trailer, seen below, which highlighted new features and also confirmed it will launch alongside PS VR itself on October 13th. New DLC packs with different costumes were also teased.

Sony’s Japan Studio then had a new project to reveal in collaboration with Acquire, the developer best known for series like Tenchu and Way of the Samurai. The name of its new title translates to V! brave namaikida R, and a reveal trailer showcased cutesy characters in a bright fantasy setting. It seemed to be an adventure game of some sort, though there wasn’t much else to say about it other than it will be coming next year.

Resident Evil 7 was up next, though not how you might expect. A trailer for the upcoming horror game, which features full PS VR support, was shown, but the big news from today was that Sony and Capcom will be releasing a VR music video for the game at PS VR launch. The somewhat strange collaboration will see members of the Japanese band L’Arc-en-Ciel photo-scanned and put into a new experience within the Resident Evil universe.

This gave way to the reveal of new VR video content for PS VR, which isn’t something that company has really touched upon yet. In a sizzle reel Sony showcased both CG and 360 video content, confirming that movies like Baobab Studio’s Invasion! and Penrose Studios’ Allumette would be coming to the platform. We also got brief looks at the new Godzilla VR experience and upcoming Karaoke app, Joysound VR.

Finally, in what might be the most exciting announcement for hardcore gamers, Platinum Games and Cygames announced that its new Japanese role-playing game (JRPG), GranBlue Fantasy, would be coming to both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR in 2018. We got a first look at the game, which is absolutely gorgeous, though there’s no word on a possible western release just yet.

Combine that with an impressive first look at anywhereVR and it was a busy event for PlayStation VR fans. Now we’re just looking forward to actually, you know, playing PS VR ourselves in a months’ time.
